Main Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about Spending Money in the context of no-spend year experience

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a phone call role-play in the context of "no-spend year" experience

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss a picture of an empty wallet and elicited the meaning of spending money. Show Ss pictures of supermarket, cosmetics, restaurant, Mall bags, and ask Ss to discuss 2 questions in 3 mins: * how do you spend your money? *Do you save money or spend them all? - Monitor Ss discussion and take their feedback.

Pre-Reading/ TPV (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T uses pictures to elicite vocabulary mortgage, pub, radical, vinegar, isolated. Use a game to present definitions and samples and let Ss guess the meaning. 1- definition for radical /ˈræd.ɪ.kəl/ believing or expressing the belief that there should be great or extreme social or political change.

While-Reading/ #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

T tells Ss to read the passage quickly.T and SS read the passage and try to match the passage paragraphs with the questions in Exercise 3b. ICQs: Are we going to read slowly? (expected answer: no) Are we going to speak ? expected answer: match) make a demo for the first question. Discuss in pairs the answers, then show them the answer key.

While-Reading#2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T tells Ss to read the article again and mark the sentences True / False. ICQs: * Are we going to work in pairs? (expected answer: no) *Are we going to correct the answers? (expected answer: no) Ask the Ss to check their answers in pairs. Give feedback by showing them the answers on the screen.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In groups of three T asks Ss to discuss these questions: 1- Could you make a "no-spend year experience? Why? 2- why do we spend much time on unnecessary things? 3- Could you deffrentiate between "need" and "want? After the time is up, thank the students and finish the lesson.
