Description

In this lesson, students will learn some vocabulary about money and shopping. This is followed by pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading activities which are also about money and shopping experiences. After that, the difference between the present perfect and past simple tense is covered. Lastly, a speaking task is done.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

The teacher greets the students and asks some daily questions. She talks about the sit-com series and TV show "Friends", and also takes comments from students. She opens a scene from Friends in which characters are bargaining to buy a ring in a store.

Pre-Teaching Vocabulary (3-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the reading text and teach the unkown vocabulary

After watching the video, the teacher asks questions about the video and tries to elicit some words from students. After eliciting, she shows the target vocabulary and its definitions. The teacher asks students to repeat the words after her and teaches pronunciation. Then, she asks the students to fill in the blanks in the 1b section after the lesson.

Pre-Reading (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students are expected to work in pairs. The teacher asks students to ask and answer the questions to one another in the 2a section of the book for three minutes. Questions: -When do shops have sales in your country? When is the biggest sales season? -What kinds of products do people buy in the sales? Then the teacher asks what they have talked about. After that, the teacher asks students to read the first paragraph and guess the gist of the text.

While-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with specific information reading task

The teacher asks students to read the whole text individually. After that, she opens the QR code of Mentimeter for true/false activity. Students are expected to answer the questions on their mobile phones. After each question, the teacher checks the answers and asks for justification for the false sentences. True-False Questions: -Boxing Day is on 26 December and is considered a bigger shopping day than Black Friday in the UK. (False) -Black Friday occurs every year in late November. (True) -Amazon was the first to introduce Black Friday to online shoppers in the UK in 2010. (True) -Black Friday sales have made more than $30 billion in China. (False) -Boxing Day is a traditional sales day in the U.S.A. (False)

Post-Reading (4-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students are expected to do the questionnaire in the 2c section on their own for two minutes. Then, the teacher asks students to swap their books with their pairs and look at the results she showed on the board. After that, students are supposed to share the results with their pairs and ask them whether they agree with the result. At the end, the teacher can ask students to share the results with the class.

Grammar (3-4 minutes) • To provide awareness about the difference between simple past and present perfect tense through induction

The teacher shows six sentences from the Grammar section part A. She asks students to guess which of the sentences are past simple and which ones are present perfect. Students are expected to fill in the boxes in the 4b section. Answers: 2, 6 – past simple 1, 3, 4, 5 – present perfect Then she asks them to complete the rules with time expressions in the 4c section of the book. Answers: Present perfect: before, never, ever Past simple: this morning, last night

Speaking (5-6 minutes) • To provide speaking fluency about money and shopping experiences

Students are expected to play a game named "find someone who" for three minutes. The teacher asks students to find someone who has done for each thing in the grid (in the 5b section). Students are supposed to wander around the classroom to find people and use "Have you ever..." while asking questions. After the game is over, the teacher asks them what was the most interesting thing they heard during the game. Lastly, the teacher asks students what they have learned in this lesson and takes one word from each student, and summarizes the things covered.
