Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening and reading practice using a text about learning to learn

Subsidiary Aims

  • To have students gain new vocabulary in the context of learning to learn

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students and the teacher play a memory game together.

Pre-Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher will do a poll to see whether students agree with the statements or not. Then, she asks them to discuss the ones they agree with in pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

The students listen to the track, and then, in pairs, they discuss whether the teacher in the listening track agrees with the statements from the previous activity.

Reading Warm Up (5-6 minutes) • To engage students for the reading text

The teacher asks them to take a quiz to find out what kind of learner they are. Then, they discuss the questions in the book before reading in pairs. They match the questions with the paragraphs.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To get students familiar with the reading and teach some vocabulary

Students discuss the questions in the book (2a) before reading in pairs. They match the questions with the paragraphs. The teacher gives some new vocabulary to the students with example sentences with the definitions.

While-Reading 2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

They will read the text in detail and answer the questions in activity 2c in pairs.

Post-Reading/Listening (3-4 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The teacher hands out an exit slip to the students. They write about what they have learned, what they would like to learn next, and one question they have.
