Cycle 2-4 / A2 Coaching level

Materials

Abc Google Jamboard / FigJam

Main Aims

  • Ss will be exposed to comunication and technology vocabulary and be able to identify unkown words to practice in future lessons.
  • Ss will be able to review possessive adjectives and pronouns via reading and writing.
  • Ss will understand the expectations in the KET writing exam.
  • Ss can produce the short u sound and can produce the plural and ed suffix.
  • Ss can spell HFW correctly related to Short u vowel sound.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Student understands how intonation can change the meaning of the word.
  • Ss will revise different categories of adverbs (manner, degree, time, frequency) via assigning labels.
  • Ss will review the content of lesson 4 in a mini quiz.

Procedure

Greeting + Last class review (15-16 minutes) • To review the homework and content learned in last lesson.

Greet the student and ask how they are, what time it is, and how the weather is in where they live. Either check the ss completion of homework in TLC time and review incorrect answers, and/or present ss with last class quiz from Dropbox lesson plan.

Mapping (2-3 minutes) • To familiarize the student with the contents of today's class.

Show student the map of class objectives and ask CCQs to make sure they understand what certain facets are.

Phonetics (6-7 minutes) • To review the use of short u sound and HFW.

Go to the slide with the title SHORT U and phoneme /ĘŚ/. Solicit the sound from the student. If they don't know, board the word BUG with photo and solicit word. Ss repeats, holding out vowel sound: bu-u-ug. Ss reads the words on the short u list and T checks for pronunciation. T solicits short i sound in isolation: what sound do all these vowels share? HFW: T boards 9 simple sentences with the following sight words highlighted: come, does, done, Monday, mother, brother, money, monkey, some. T explains that these words share the same short u sound and solicits the sound. Ss reads the words, holding out the short u sound, and circles the grapheme that represents the sound.

Daily Grammar Practice (7-8 minutes) • Ss will be able to identify parts of speech in a sentence, specifically: nouns (type), determiners (type), and adverbs.

T boards 4 sentences: His grandmother speaks loudly. They sometimes visit us at home. That is a very modern phone. We called her yesterday. Give ss various sticky notes: possessive adjective, demonstrative, article, pronoun (x5), verb (4x), adverb of frequency, time, degree, and manner, noun (x3), preposition, adjective. T gives ss 1 minute to match the sticky notes with the correct parts of speech. Tell ss that x are wrong, or remove wrong answers and let ss try again.

Reading for Understanding and Stamina (8-10 minutes) • To provide ss with practice scanning and to expose them to an email.

T sets gist question: What type of text is this? (email, story, or essay) ss to read the email out loud + answer meaning Qs. Ss scans again and answers: Who wrote the email? What does Beatriz do on her phone? What does Beatriz want to do soon? What questions does Beatriz ask you? (t solicits: how are you? what do you do on your phone? when are you free?) t and ss highlight where these questions appear.

What is the KET writing exam? (12-15 minutes) • To review expectations of KET writing exam parts 1 & 2.

Remind ss that there are 4 parts to the KET (A2) exam, and each is worth 25% of the grade. Tell ss that this is an example of an email, 1 part of the KET writing exam. T exposes ss to a story (related to tech & comms vocab) in pictures. T and S practice some appropriate responses for the email. T shows ss an example response for the story (t draws: tech & comms vocab) and solicits form, highlights important aspects of a story: conjunctions, adverbs of time, etc.

Vocabulary & Game (12-15 minutes) • To provide exposure to comms & tech vocab thru a game. To teach unknown vocab from occupation & location etc.

T presents previously unknown vocab from lesson 4 (occupation & location) as well as any other words T deems necessary using the 5 steps to vocabulary introduction: present flashcards; listen, repeat and circle. T dictates the words and ss spells them on board next to the corresponding picture. Then, ss recalls the words based on written definitions. Ss plays tech, comms, and adverbs baamboozle. T notes unknown/incorrect answers to practice in the next class.

Grammar at word level review (12-13 minutes) • To provide practice working on grammatical concepts reviewed in MTP1: nouns and determiners.

T and ss play a game to review language that t deems necessary, especially: possessive adjectives, pronouns, noun/determiner agreement, countable/uncountable with quantifiers, irregular plural, etc..

Extra if time: review unknown irregular verbs. (13-0 minutes) • To provide ss with practice with meaning and form of irregular verbs lists 1-8.

Using ongoing notes, t quizzes ss and vice versa on translations of previously missed irregular verbs.

Set Homework & Goodbye (2-3 minutes) • To close the lesson and assure student knows what to do for homework.

Congratulate the student on their performance and say goodbye.
