Procedure (37-49 minutes)
The teacher greets the students. The teacher explains the sports trivia quiz activity. The teacher starts with the slides with a series of trivia questions related to different sports. Students listen and participate in answering the trivia questions.
Activity 1.a The teacher asks students to look at the photos and name the sports and the sportspeople. MentiMeter Wordcloud The teacher explains the task and asks students to use MentiMeter to create a word cloud by answering the question, "What makes a successful athlete or a sportsperson?" The teacher displays the word cloud and facilitates a discussion about common words and themes that appear. Students submit their answers on MentiMeter. Students participate in the discussion about the word cloud. Activity 1.b The teacher asks students to compare the word cloud and the words in activity 1.b and asks is there are common features. Students give answers.
The teacher underlines the target vocabulary on the text and hands out the vocabulary worksheet. The teacher asks students to find the words that match the definitions on the worksheet. This activity is first done individually, compared with pairs, and checked as a whole class.
Numbers and Names (Scanning the Text) The teacher provides the numbers and names from the text (1964, 1.75, Kenya, “glued to his feed”). The teacher asks students to scan the text to find what these numbers and names represent. Students scan the text to identify the significance of the given numbers and names.
The teacher instructs students to read the text and answer the questions in activity 2.e individually. The teacher asks students to compare their answers with a partner after completing the task. Answers are checked as a whole class. The teacher asks students the question in activity 2.f. The teacher elicits answers from students. (optional)
Creating a Digital Poster The teacher divides students into groups and explains the task of creating a digital poster about a sportsperson. The teacher outlines the information to be included in the poster: personal info, the branch of sports, the significance of success, and inspirational aspects of the story. The teacher provides students with a template for students to use. Students research and create digital posters in groups. Students present their posters to the class. Exit Ticket The teacher asks students to write three things they learned today on Padlet.
