I Don't Believe It - Truth or Lies
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson students will learn new vocabulary related to lying and be introduced to the difference between things we "say" and things we "tell".

Materials

Abc whiteboard, paper and pen

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about identifying people who lie in the context of white lies and storytelling

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a discussion

Procedure

Warm Up (2-4 minutes) • To introduce the topic of "Truth vs. Lies"

I will show three statements about myself to the students, explaining that one statement isn't true. I will then spend a few minutes letting the students ask me questions to help determine which statement is a lie. Finally I will let the students vote on which one I am lying about.

Introduction of Text (1-3 minutes) • To prepare students for the text they will read.

I will ask the students how they can tell if somebody is lying and write the answers on the WB.

Pre-Teaching of vocabulary (7-10 minutes) • To cover possible problem vocabulary before reading the text.

I will try to elicit the vocabulary from the students using questions and possible other methods including showing pictures. I will drill each word, finally writing it with stress and part of speech. Once we are finished with the list (7 words), I will give the students a copy of the vocabulary for future reference.

Reading the text (7-10 minutes) • Get students to skim the text in order to check the ideas they have already expressed and prepare them for the excercises.

After pre-teaching the vocabulary, I will hand each student the text and have them work alone to read it and consider if their ideas are mention. I might take one or two comments related to how their ideas were or weren't expressed. Finally I will have the students take turns reading sentences from the text to the class.

Topic Excercises (8-10 minutes) • To introduce "say" and "tell" and check understanding

I will explain exercise 2A to the students, giving them the answer for number 1. Students will then work alone to complete the rest of the questions. Once the students are finished, I will pair them to check their answers with each other. Once they have finished checking their answers, I will check them with the students. I will then explain exercise 2B to the students, giving them the example given in the book. I will have the students work with their previous partner to complete the chart, then have them switch partners to check their answers. Finally I will have the students tell me the answers and give corrections if needed.

Final Discussion (5-10 minutes) • To allow students free discussion of topic and elicit feedback

I will read through the questions from the PowerPoint to make sure that students understand the gist of them and help clear up any misunderstandings. I will then either group students into 3's or pairs depending on class size, and give them a handout with the questions. I will ask them to discuss their own answers to the questions with their group/pair. If time allows, I will pick 1 student from each group to share their thoughts.
