Description

In this lesson, Ss learn the different parts of a newspaper. Working in groups and and creating their own editorial team of a popular newspaper . They choose the main story, secondary story and headline. Ss then design the layout of the newspaper in groups using pictures which are handed to them to use. The students choose a representative to explain their choice of story.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Review the word "editor" with the Ss. Elicit what the editor does. Tell Ss that they'll be working on a newspaper team and will be putting together a newspaper. Organize six groups, and elicit ideas about how the editor chooses the stories.

Introducing Vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Organize SS into six groups and tell them that they will be working for an editorial team of a newspaper. Elicit ideas about how the editor chooses the stories. Tell the students that they will choose some stories for their newspapers, but first they'll look at some vocabulary: ( Showing the stress and intonation on the W/B) - Factory. - Politician. -Thriller - Violent. - Announced. - Presenter - Increase

Preparation for speaking (8-10 minutes) • To warm up the Ss for a speaking activity and organising

Tell the Ss to read the outlines of the news stories and to decide alone which story should be the main and secondary story on the front page. They should give reasons for their choice. Pass out the list of outlines to the groups ( 3 groups have a list on page 128, and 3 groups have a list on page 130). Tell the Ss that they need to agree on the front cover stories for their newspapers. They need to think think about what kind of newspaper they are, which stories will be popular and make people want to buy their newspaper.

Productive Task(s) (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss discuss within their groups, the reasons of their choices for the newspaper_ each explaining their choices and why. Then, deciding on the main and second stories for the front page and deciding what kind of newspaper they are. Ask students what they will need for a newspaper besides the two main stories. Give the Ss blank paper and have the Ss design the layout of the front page, think of the name of the newspaper, write headlines and organise the photos.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language
