Main Aims

  • To provide review of employment lexis

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students freer speaking practice and review lexis related to employment

Procedure

Lead-In (5-10 minutes) • Set the context and get Sts interested to read.

I will write "WHAT IS YOUR JOB?" on the WB and ask their jobs. If there are a few interesting job titles I will put them on the WB.

Pre-reading (10-15 minutes) • To prepare Sts for reading and explain what it is all about

Link from lead-in example.I will show the photos on the WB and ask them to guess the job titles. They discuss their answers in pairs. I will hand out the exercise 1 and Ss will do it by matching the photos with job titles from exercise 1. I will share my bad experience with them. This is followed by handling out the article.

While-reading (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning of a few words from each paragraph

I will explain the meaning of "Nightmare Jobs". This is a part of guessing the meaning of the words, a sub-skill practice. Ss read the article to infer the vocabulary. I will clarify some words and go round offering help with them where necessary. I will not explain the words that will be subject of the next exercise. I will ask them about the bad experiences from the article when they finish reading.I will do a small exercise to get the summary from the article by drawing an empty diagram on the WB with names, worst things and worst jobs as titles. I will ask students to come to the board and fill the rest: "Names/Worst Things/Worst Jobs"

Filling the gaps (10-15 minutes) • To get them think about the meaning of words

I will modify the exercise 3. Before giving handouts, I will write the synonyms of these missing words on the WB and the first capital of the words that we look for. I will ask them to search them in the article. I will go around and monitor them to see if they are OK with it. If they find it difficult I will write my examples on WB and do it together WC. Ss will move on the exercise 3. I will mention Ss that these sentences are not from the article. They will try to find the missing word. I let Ss try them with in pairs. I will monitor the situation 10 minutes and do the exercise on the WB.

Post-reading (5-10 minutes) • To have the practicing opportunity to discuss the new words

Ss will discuss this topic and finish with the speaking exercise. I will get Ss to relate the topic and personalize their experiences with exercise 4. I will get a few FB from Ss and finish the class.
