Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and deduction reading practice using a text about unusual houses in the context of different types of houses.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of unusual houses

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

when you are tired, it's good to have a good place to go... I was looking for a house. How many types of houses do we have? Are all of them normal?

Exposure (10-15 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Put the pictures of the new words on the board one by one, while they are talking about them. unusual/ tree house/ igloo/ crooked house/ architect.

Clarification (5-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ask CCQs: -Number the pictures. Then ask them which one is a tree house? -Show them a normal house and an unusual house. Ask them which one is unusual? Write the words under the pictures and ask them to repeat after you.

Highlighting (10-15 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-Ask them to gist read the text for about 4 minutes. Ask them ICQs: Are you going to answer the questions? No. Are you going to just read the text? Yes. -Ask them to answer this question in pair.(Where do you think the houses are?) -Put the pictures on the board and ask them: Which one do you like? why?

Controlled Practice (5-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Book: read the text again and answer the questions. -Feedback: First check in pair, then with the whole class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Put maps of some houses on the board and number them. S1 describes a house, S2 says the number.

Free Practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- Role play: S1 wants to buy an unusual house; S2 is a Real estate agent (a house seller).
