Teaching Practice 7
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson students will learn how to make passive sentences in affirmative and question forms through guided activities in the context of olympic games. They will also practice reading for specific information in the same context. Then they will do a speaking activity through a freer practice.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide students with clarification of passive voice in affirmative and question forms and give practice about their structure in the context of olympic sports.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students practice in reading for specific information and speaking via freer activity to be able to use what they have learned.

Procedure

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Ss do the ex-1 and complete the chart scanning the text about olympic games. Before they do that, T shows them the first example on WB. They need to be careful about the tenses of the sentences. Then Ss check their answers with a partner. Then I nominate them to come to the WB and write their answers

Teach (10-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

T highlights the meanings of the sentences Ss wrote on the WB. T asks CCQs: Do we know who did the job? no Is it important who did it? no. Which one are we interested in: what happened or who did it? what happened. Elicit the form from Ss and write on the board. T models and drills the pronunciation. T writes on WB 'The competition was won ______ Louise Crandal' and elicit 'by' from Ss. Then T shows them an example of a question sentence. Where were the first modern Olympics held in 1896? The first modern Olympics were held in Athens.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • To check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

After they see the questions froms, Ss do the ex-2 and decide whether the sentences are active or passive. Then they write answers to these questions using the answers in ex-3 with a partner. T monitors and helps them when necessary. T projects the answers on WB, ss check and T highlight any mistake if there is.

Free practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language and a chance to expand on what they have learned.

Each student will write two question sentences in passive about the sports activities in Turkey or all around the world. T helps them to write their questions. Then they ask to their friends and others try to answer. They change turns in pairs/groups. T monitors them and notes down mistakes If they make, then Ss self correct them. T clarifies.
