Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students are asked the question in part a: What do you know about Tokyo? Have you ever been there? Would you like to go? Why/Why not? After getting the opinion, students are invited to play a fun facts game on Kahoot. Then, students are asked the second question: Look at places 1-5 in Tokyo Highlights. Which would you like to visit? Students take poll via Mentimeter.

While-Listening #1 (2-5 minutes) • To provide students with gist of the listening task

Students are to listen to the text. They answer the questions: Which places in Tokyo Highlights do they decide to visit? Which three other places do they decide to visit?

While-Listening #2 (2-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference from the listening task

Before listening again, teacher asks students to check the questions first and underline some keywords to catch in the listening tasks. Then students listen one more time and answer detailed questions: Why do they decide not to go to the Imperial Palace? How does Harry describe the noodle restaurant? What happens at Yoyogi Park? Why is Akihabara a good place for Mike’s shopping? Where will they do karaoke? Why does Harry want to go to the market in the early morning? Review answers together.

Post-Listening (2-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the listening and expand on what they've learned

Students are asked to discuss whether they think these were good choices and if there are any places they would not like to visit. Then students are paired to think and discuss about their own country/city. Which places or food would they recommend to a tourist?

Assignment • To make students revise their knowledge and create a familiarity with the topic

Students are given an assignment. They are to imagine themselves as a friend of Mike and Harry. Then, students are to think about what they brainstormed in the previous task. Students should write an email that talks about their country/city, the places to visit and the food to eat and design a trip. Their emails should be sent to the instructor's mail: seymacosskun@gmail.com
