Numbers and Ages
Beginner level

Description

In this lesson, students will learn about numbers and how to properly pronounce, stress and write them. They will listen to recordings, and complete controlled and semi-controlled worksheets. Students will also have a competitive activity at the end of the lesson in order to review what they learned.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of numbers in the context of talking about people's ages.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information about the spelling, pronounciation and stress of the vocabulary words.

Procedure

Warm-up Activity (1-2 minutes) • To introduce students to asking and aswering questions regarding age.

- Write "How old are you? I am ___ years old." on WB - Demonstrate by asking a S. Then make Ss stand up and ask each other their age.

Pronounciation and Controlled Activity (7-8 minutes) • To introduce students to the spelling and pronunciation of numbers

- Give instructions: "Don't open paper. Listen and repeat." -ICQ: "Do you open the paper?" -Give HO(1+2) -Play R2.15 -Point out irregular spelling of 'thirteen' and 'fifteen' on WB -Give instructions for same HO: "Open your paper. Match. Work with your partner." - Check by listing the numbers on the WB, and let Ss fill out answer key themselves. - Give instructions: "Listen and repeat." - Play R2.16

Stress and Pronounciation (5-6 minutes) • To give students the oppurtunity to listen and practice writing stress in vocabulary words.

- Write down [fourteen forty sixteen sixty eighteen eighty] with their stresses on the WB - Tell Ss to "Listen." Play R2.17 - Point out that we stress the "teen" in numbers 13-19, and the "first syllable" in the rest. - Write the following on the WB and let students come up and place the stress. [seventeen ninety fifty thirteen nineteen seventy fifteen ] - Tell students to, "Listen and check." Play R2.18

Listening and Pronunciation (2-3 minutes) • To allow students to listen and pronounce numbers

- Tell students to, "Listen and repeat." - Play R2.17 and R2.18 again.

Practicing Writing Numbers (5-7 minutes) • To introduce students to hyphen usgage when spelling numbers, and where to stress.

-Write on WB: [23 twenty-three 24 twenty-four] and point out hyphen usage - Give instructions: "Work alone; no partners. Write the numbers." - Give HO (5) - Ss check with partner - List numbers 23-29 on WB, and let students fill in answer key - Point out that we stress the second syllable by writing the stresses on the numbers - Write these numbers on the WB: [27 35 49 52 68 73 86 94] - Have each S say each number.

Semi-controlled, Student-Centered Activity (2-3 minutes) • To let students practice spelling and saying numbers in a student centered environment.

- Tell students to "Turn paper around. Write 4 numbers." - Demonstrate instructions with a pair of Ss. Tell one to "Read your numbers" and the other to "Write his/her numbers" - Pair Ss with different partner to complete activity and check together.

Controlled Gap-fill Activity part. 1 (3-4 minutes) • To let students practice their vocabulary by filing in a gap-fill HO.

- Give instructions: "Don't open. Match words to numbers. Work with your partner." -ICQ: "Do we open the paper?" - Give (folded) HO (7a/7b) -Write numbers 1-5 on WB while students work - Check by letting students fill in answer key on WB - Drill vocabulary words (1 through 5)

Controlled Gap-fill Activity part. 2 (3-4 minutes) • To allow students to listen and practice writing their vocabulary even further.

- Instructions: "Open the paper (HO7a/7b). Listen and fill in gaps." - Play R2.19. Repeat if necessary. - Check in pairs. - Write 1-5 on WB and let Ss fill in answer key

Gap-fill Conversations (4-5 minutes) • To get students to practice using their vocabulary in questions regarding age.

- Give instructions: "Fill gaps with words. Work with your partner." - Give HO (8a) - While Ss are working, write the speech bubbles and sentences on WB - Instructions: "Listen and check". Play R2.20 - To check, Ss fill in answer key (speech bubbles) on WB - Instructions: "Listen and repeat." Play R2.20 again

Semi-controlled Speaking Activity (2-2 minutes) • To help students practice asking each other questions about age.

- Show picture on previous HO(7a/7b) - Demonstrate by asking Ss, "How old is the girl (in the picture)?" - Put Ss into different pairs and let them ask each other questions.

Semi-controlled, Student-Centered Competitive Activity (4-7 minutes) • To allow students to be engaged while completing an activity about guessing ages.

- While Ss are asking each other questions, write "Group 1" and "Group 2" on WB, and list ages [45, 76, 70, 65, 46, 43, 38, 41, 37, 1, 8, 72, 6, 3 ] under each group name - Tell students to "Match the ages (point to WB and HO (10)) to the names (point to picture). Then write answers on WB. Whoever finishes first, wins." - Divide students into 2 groups, then pass out HO (10).
