Teaching Practice 1 - The Family
A1 level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
The aim is for students to be comfortable identifying and describing their immediate family and relatives/relationships.
Subsidiary Aims
-
For students to be very comfortable using the verb 'to be' while providing general information, as well as confident when using personal pronouns.
Procedure (37-49 minutes)
Greet the students. Inquire about how they are doing as a lead-in to asking about their families in general. This will set the context, i.e. "family", for the rest of the lesson. Use PP presentation slides to elicit responses for the image(s) projected.
Use PPP slides to elicit responses as to how each individual in the slides relates to the group. Start with the core family and move on to close relatives.
Introduce the words 'nephew' and 'niece', check to see if students recognize these words. Check for correct pronunciation. Introduce the word 'cousin', repeating the process used with 'nephew' and 'niece'. Use PPP slides to help students make the connection.
Ask the students to do exercises 1 and 2 on page 12 of the Headway Elementary Students' Book. Exercise 1 is fairly simple and the teacher elicits a response for each gap from the entire class. Exercise 2 will be done as PW.
Quick review of words introduced during activities 1 and 2 as well as their pronunciation, where needed.
Do exercise 3 (listening) with the students (this is on the same page as the previous two) to see if they have understood the words introduced during the lesson and can now confidently fill out a family tree. If there is time left, use the Simpsons family tree handout for additional practice.
Ask the students to work in pairs to complete exercise 4, where each student writes down the names of 4 people in his/her family and his/her partner then proceeds to ask them questions to ascertain their relationship and (exercise 5) some general details about the family member(s).
