Procedure (35-50 minutes)
Class starts with asking students to say a synonym for dilemma using the picture. We will listen to a short extract from scent of a woman where Al Pacino talks about crossroads in life. If Ss did not know the word, this can be used as a discovery task to find out the synonym for dilemma if they had already guessed the word this video will be used to initiate some talk on the topic. Prossible CCQs for Crossroads: Is there only one way? Is it easy to choose one? Are both choices good?
The "Discussion Starters" handout will be distributed and Ss in pairs will have to discuss the questions.
Ss will be chosen randomly to give a brief report about the kind of problem solver their partners are.
Ss will read 3 short texts each written by a different person talking about the crossroads they are facing. They will be given enough time to read and comprehend thoroughly then they have to speak to their partner discussing who has a more serious scenario and why.
A set of two questions are offered by the book which can turn into a role play task. One S in each pair will be the consultant and the other is client who will visit the consultant asking for help on his problem. Other than this Ss could simply discuss the questions in pair and exchange personal exprience.
Ss will have to look @ the photo and guess the answer to T's questions. Where are they? What do you think they are talking about? Do they both look happy? What do you think is wrong with the unhappy person?
Ss will listen to only one third of the text up to "... long time at my age." and then they have to explain what Derek's problem is. ICQs: Do we listen to the whole conversation? [No] Do you need to understand every word? [No] What do you have to talk about after listening?[Derek's Problem]
Ss will have to answer some gap filling questions. Let them know they do NOT have to understnd every detail of the text. They will check their answers in pairs after the text. LET THEM READ THE QUESTIONS IN 30SEC BEFORE THE LISTENING STARTS. After this Ss in pairs check their answers, if it is needed the recording will be replayed. For feeddback S come to the board to write down the answers.
Ss will go through the script of the audio file which is printed on the other side of their handout, and have to higlight any phrase that is used to give advice. This must be done vey quickly in a very competative manner among groups.
In this final task Ss try to use the epressions from the previous activity to talk about what they think is better for Derek to do.
