Pre-Intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide students with practice reading specific information in the context of well known couples' failed marriages.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide students with practice speaking through discussion of the text.
-
To review lexis related to relationships.
Procedure (35-45 minutes)
Ask students how many of them are married or single. Go on to ask the students if they know of any of the celebrity couples in the text are. Present one or two examples of well known Turkish couples which have separated. Discuss literary references of couples i.e. Romeo and Juliette. From here, lead into the first part of the lesson. Ask students to read and discuss exercise 1, then follow up with exercises 2, 3, and exercise 1 in lexis on page 17.
Pair students together and Ask them to read exercise 2 on page 16 of the HO and identify how long the couples were together as well as the cause of separation for each of the couples listed. A short description will be on the HO regarding the background of the respective couples. Discuss briefly as a class.
After the students have listed the duration of the relationship and cause of separation, ask the students to read in their pairs and answer the questions in exercise 3. This portion of the lesson is more specific so I will ask for some feedback at this stage.
Students will refer to exercise 1 on page 17 of the HO. This time I would like to mix up the groups a bit so the students may practice with a new person. They can remain in pairs or become small groups depending on the class population. I will first ask students to interpret the missing words in the sentences on their own. After they discuss, I will provide them with assistance by writing a few suggested words on the white board where is necessary so they can understand the correct words to complete the sentences.
In pairs or small groups, the students should discuss their answers from exercise 1 on page 17 to decide if they agree with the statements or not. I will ask the class in general for their feedback on the exercise.
