Description

In this lesson, Ss will have the opportunity to improve their Speaking and Listening skills. At the beginning of the lesson, to introduce the topic, the Ss will be experiencing to talk to someone who gave no feedback in any way. Then, they are going to learn some phrases such as "Oh No!", "What did you do?", "What happened then?","You are joking!"..etc to keep a story going and they will be using them in several speaking activities will be given. After that,they will have a speaking task about telling their own stories with the using of pre-taught new vocabularies "stuck", "chase", "mistaken for someone", "embarrassing" in pairs. Then they will listen how the intonations are used in the conversation to develop their receptive skill.The Ss also will notice the difference between interested and bored intonations. There will be a role play conversation to practice using phrases and the intonations for the Ss to develop their productive skill.As a final activity, in each turn the students will decide whether the players (Ss) lie or not.The lesson will finish by giving opportunities the Ss to make some self-correction.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice via using appropriate phrases, intonations, mimicking, repetition and new vocabularies in a conversation in the context of telling SS's own stories

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice with the intonations and phrases using a conversation in the context of story telling

Procedure

Stage 1: Lead in (Speaking ) (2-3 minutes) • To introduce the topic and make the context intriguing to Ss and to be able the Ss understand the main idea by animation.

1- Put the Ss in pairs A&B and let A briefly explains what happened in the last lesson to B. B does not answer in anyway. Then swap the Ss 2-Get feedback from Ss and to elicit from Ss how was the speaking against to an unresponsive person ?Is not it uncomfortable ?

Stage 2: (Vocabulary) (5-7 minutes) • To learn and to be familiar with most commonly used phrases in a conversation as "Oh No!" , "Really ?", "You are kidding me?", "Then what?" …etc

1-Pass out the Student's Book Hand-outs (Gap- Fill) 2- Show SS the images and the phrases hand-outs to make the topic more entertaining. 3- Ss fill the gaps in 6a with the phrases given. Make the first with one with them. After that, Ss check the answers in pairs. 4-Elicit SS's answers.

Stage 3 : ( Listening) (7-10 minutes) • To teach and emphasize the intonations of the phrases and to ensure the controlled listening, improving receptive skill

1-Play recording once 2.9 while Ss checking their answers. 2-Notice Ss how the intonation is used to sound interested. 3-Play the recording again and pause after each phrase for the Ss to repeat, mimicking the intonation used. (O/C discuss about the difference) 4- Play the recording a third time and pause after each phrase, but this time exercise on the bored sound. 5 Discuss the difference with Ss 6-Read the tip with the class , then say the phrase "How amazing ! ", for them to repeat to sound interested.

Stage 4 : (Speaking) (5-7 minutes) • To provide the new Speaking Task for Ss to improve their productive skill

1)Write the below sentences on the White Board: a- So I got on the bus to work and saw an old school friend who I hadn't seen for years. b- I sat down next to her and said ; "Hi, how are things with you?" c- She looked at me a bit strangely, but replied, "Fine thanks!" d- I asked her, "How's your brother these days?" e- She said; "Fine thanks, but do I know you?" f- I realised I'd made a mistake and didn't know her! 2)SS work in pairs to tell the sentences and their partner uses the phrases from 6a. They have the opportunity to choose between interested or bored way. Then, they change the roles.Decide which pairs to perform to class.

Stage 5 : ( Vocabulary) (2-3 minutes) • To provide the new vocabulary

1-SS pick one among closed tiny papers and after open it they find the written meaning of the new vocabulary. ("stuck", "chase", "mistaken for someone", "embarrassing") 2-Check them understand especially " got stuck" and "chased".

Stage 6: (Speaking) (8-12 minutes) • To practice using intonations and phrases and to encourage Ss for speaking

1-Inform Ss that they will be telling a story that could be either true or not. 2-Show SS the Stories HO 3-Ss choose one of the stories from the given list in 7a and take their time to get prepared.(2-3 min.) 4-Remind Ss to use the sequencers from Ex.4A ("This happened when", "The next thing I knew", " Anyway","In the end", "Before long", " And then", "All of a sudden" 5-Monitor and provide support for the new vocabularies.You may write the phrases and vocabulary on board from 6A 6-Ss tell their stories in groups of four. Others should respond via using the expressions 7-After completed each turn, other Ss should make a decision about it is a lie or a true story 8- Try to observe some common mistakes and note down.

STAGE 7: (Error Correction) (2-3 minutes) • To clarify the Speaking mistakes and giving opportunities Ss to make self-correction

While ending the lesson, write common errors on board and demand some help from Ss to improve/correct.
