Description

In this lesson, students learn about the different names, family members and a family tree. The lesson starts with Susan recording. Students identify the name Susan doesn’t like.That is followed by my questions about her. Students listen Susan talking again. That is followed by a matching exercise. After that, I talk about the meaning of my name and students work with in pairs to talk about the meaning of their names. That is followed by my family tree. They ask yes/no questions to me about family tree. Next, students note own the first names of people in their family on the text. They discuss about these names and compare their findings. They ask each other which name they like/dislike, or has a special meaning, or is out of fashion, or popular, or very unusual. and students family tree exercise.

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed listening practice using a text about information about family names and relations

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice pronouns and yes/no questions

Procedure

Lead-In (3-5 minutes) • To get interest in the topics

I talk about the subjects of my lesson briefly:1) Listening Susan, 2) Some questions about her, 3) Listening again & Matching exercise, 4) Family word exercise, 5) My family tree, 6)Ss family tree

Listening practice (5-10 minutes) • To understand the conversation

I talk about what they are going to listen. They should identify the name Susan doesn’t like. I ask some questions about Susan

Listening again&Matching exercise (5-10 minutes) • To have the second opportunity to listen

I re-play the recording. Ss match people in Susan`s life with the names that they call her. I let Ss compare their answers. And I check with the class.

Oral practice (5-10 minutes) • To learn new vocabulary

First, I talk about the meaning of my name. Ss talk to their partner about the meaning of their names. Ss talk about their names and what they like&dislike about them. I go around and talk to each pair. If there is something interesting I let them talk to class.

Presentation of my family tree (10-15 minutes) • To understand the relationship and questions types

I draw my family tree. Ss ask some questions about my family members. They practice the words&pronouns and yes/no questions.

Practice of family words (10-15 minutes) • To help Ss understand what family names look like

Ss fill the table which is provided in the text. They talk about their relationship with their partners. I go around and talk to them.

Written and oral practice (10-15 minutes) • To have Ss with a challenging work and practice vocabulary

I get Ss to draw their family tree. Ss work in pairs and ask questions about family. They write one question on the board and the other answers it. For example; Is Ali your brother? Yes, he is.
