Materials
Main Aims
-
To introduce and give practice in Present Perfect Continuous and time expressions ‘since’ and ‘for’ through the context of life changes.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To practice speaking using Present Perfect Continuous.
Procedure (39-51 minutes)
T asks Ss when Zoe from the reading in the previous lesson started working on the farm and elicits the answer 'October of last year'. T asks Ss which sentence tells them this and elicits and writes on the w/b - Zoe has been working on the farm since October of last year-
1 T asks the Ss the following CCQs: When did the action start? ( Last October - in the past) Is the action still continuing? ( Yes) What tense is it? (Present Perfect Continuous) T writes Present Perfect Continuous on the w/b as a title. 2 T elicits the form of Present Perfect Continuous and marks it onto a model sentence. T checks that Ss know how to make sentences negative and positive.
Ss complete ex1,p67 by putting the verbs in brackets into the Present Perfect Continuous. T gets an early finisher to write their answers on the w/b.
The students work in small groups to stick the cards with time expressions on the walls under the 'since' or 'for' headings. The groups check each other's answers. Then T gives them the answer key to check.
Ss in pairs find three mistakes in the sentences and correct them (ex3,p67). They explain why the verbs are incorrect. T checks the answers w/c and elicits that 'understand', 'know', and 'be' are stative verbs and cannot be used in the continuous.
T puts Ss into groups of 4 and gets them to take the cards from the earlier stage off the walls and arrange them face up in a circle on the desk. T demos a game the students are going to play. Ss take turns throwing the dice and moving clockwise round the circle of time phrases according to the number they threw. They should make a sentence using the time expression they landed on about something in their own lives. T monitors and takes some general FB about what they have learnt about each other.
