Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To practice skimming and scanning and reading for gist and for details in the context of an article about names.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To review some common collocations eg. make a decision and to let students practise speaking in the TL.
Procedure (31-45 minutes)
Ask students if they remember my name and then I write it on the board and tell them that each one has a story behind his/her name and that it is one of the things that we never choose like our parents or where we live etc. Then I start telling them the story of my name and ask if anyone has a similar story or a different one and if they like their names or not. Then will have a look at the girl's picture on page 5 and answer these questions :1. What names would you give this baby girl? 2. Are their popular names for girls/ boys in turkey?
Blu tack on w/b pictures of the following famous people: Elton John, Marilyn Monroe, David Bowie, Demi Moore, Madonna and Bill Clinton. Ask students to come to the board if they know any of the people in the pictures and what they do. Students will come up to w/b and say which people they know and tell their friends a little bit about their life and profession. Ask students if they know what these people have in common and elicit as many answers without correcting them.
Ask students to have a quick look at the text and tell me what it is about. Ask students what these two have in common as mentioned in the book. Or ask them which of those people had strange names? Answer is Elton John and Marilyn Monroe. Which of those had strange names for their children? Answer is Demi Moore and David Bowie. Which of these named their children after a famous place? Answer is David Beckham, Madonna and Bill Clinton. Then ask students to answer ex 2 in pairs then check with the class.
Ask students to think in pairs of other reasons behind choosing a name in relation to their family, friends and people they know in class. Then Give out flash cards with collocations but the collocation is written on two cards. Students try to find the complete collocation by moving around in class. If they do, they blue tack it on WB. Once they are done, they answer ex 1(lexis) and then check it with them. In paris they find out if any of the sentences in 1 are true for their partner.
