Procedure (63-85 minutes)
T divides teachers into two groups, nominating one teacher from each group. The nominees sit on a chair in front of the opposite team. T gives instructions and pays attention to the teachers as they are doing the warmer. In this warmer, teachers have to ask Yes/ No questions to the nominated teacher to figure out the word which she thought of. The first team guesses the answer wins. CCQs # Are you going to think of a concrete or abstract words? # Are you going to ask the nominees Yes/No questions or Wh/ questions? # How many questions can each group ask?
In this activity, teachers will learn about one of techniques followed in teaching vocabulary. Target adjectives will be elicited and they will be written on the board. Trainer checks understanding and then drills target language. To contextualize language trainees will put the target adjectives in sentences.
In this activity, teachers will learn about one of techniques followed in teaching grammar. Target language will be elicited and they will be written on the board. Trainer checks understanding and then drills target language. To practice the target trainees will put the grammar point in sentences taken from a miming game.
In this activity, teachers will learn about one of techniques followed in teaching functional language. A jumbled dialogue will be given to the trainees to put in order. Trainees checks answers from the whole dialogue on the board. Then, they practice the dialogue and trainer monitors and takes a stripe once in a while till all stripes are gone. Two volunteers will try to have their dialogue in front of the whole class.
A general discussion will be held to sum up all about controlled oral practice by throwing some questions. Trainer gets feedback at the end. Questions to discuss: # What are the advantages and disadvantages of controlled oral practice? # What is the purpose of controlled oral practice? # What makes a good practice activity? # Do you correct students' mistakes in controlled practice activities?
