Description

In this lesson, students practice writing skills through a personal letter (opinion). The lesson starts with a quick reading and a discussion about the advice given on a problem page from a parenting magazine. It will continue with covering language used for expressing opinion. Finally, students will practice writing with using ways of expressing opinion.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of writing a personal opinion letter in the context of moving to the country.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for expressing opinion in the context of moving to the country.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

We will begin with brainstorming what a problem page is, who writes to them and what they write about. I will elicit some examples of topics discussed in problem pages and see if they can come up with some famous problem pages in Turkey. (e.g. Guzin Abla) to check understanding.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

I will give each students a copy of the Problem Page and explain that it is from a parenting magazine. Students will have 5 minutes to read it, and discuss with their partner what the problem is and whether they agree with the advice given. I will take WC FB afterwards. I will ask students to imagine they are Charlotte and they decided to take Annette's advice. In pairs, they have 3 minutes to write the list of pros and cons of moving from London to the country. After 5 minutes I will give each student a copy of Pros and Cons list to check it against their own and discuss any differences with your partner.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I will write on the board: In my opinion... I will brainstorm other ways of expressing opinion: I'm sure that... I feel that... I think that... I believe that… I'd suggest that… In my experience… As far as I'm concerned… Speaking for myself… I'd like to point out that… What I mean is… I will elicit some phrases and go over meaning and appropriacy of these ways of expressing opinion.

Productive Task(s) (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

In their pairs, I will tell students they have 10 minutes to write Charlotte's letter to Joyce, using some of the phrases covered for expressing opinion. I will emphasize they can also use their Pros and Cons list. After 10 minutes, I will stop them and ask them to swap their letters with another pair to read and check each other, see if the phrases have been used correctly. I will monitor closely to make sure of error correction.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will link the previous peer correction to a short WC FB afterwards. I will nominate students to share their letters with the class. I will correct their errors, if they have any.
