The students work in small groups. The students think of typical male and female roles in their country. they take notes on a scrap paper. They then swap the paper with the groups, compare and explain what they have written. Elicit some from the students and put the most common roles on the WB.
Write ' Why men lie and women cry'. Ask the students to guess what the listening is going to be about. Give the students exercise 1, tell the students, to look at the sentences and give their opinion about these sentences to their partner. explain that they are going to listen to Naomi, Polly and Matt discussing the roles of men and women. They listen and put the sentences into the correct order they talk about them.
Distribute exercise 2. Ask the students to look at the 7 questions. Explain that they will listen to the track again and work individually to complete the task. Give the students 2 minutes after listening to peer check and complete their answers. Monitor but don't intervene. If needed play the recording one more time. Give a paper ball to a student, nominating him/her to provide the correct answer. Provide the correct answer if its answered false. The student throws the ball to whoever he/she wants to nominate for the next sentence. Continue until all the sentences are corrected.
The students are told to stand up and get in line according to their names in alphabetical order. Ex: Ahmet, Caner, Emine, Ipek, Sevgi, Yasin, etc. Put the students in to groups of three. (Ahmet, Caner, Emine --- ipek, Sevgi, Yasin,) Give each group the discussion questions. The groups discuss their opinions, supporting their ideas and asking follow up questions to their group members for further understanding. Join group discussions, prompt ideas if needed. If time, write ' Women without her man is nothing' the students look at this sentence and are told to put punctuation. ex: women, without her man, is nothing (importance of man)/ women; without her, man is nothing.(importance of women) discuss the different meaning that arise.
