Description

In this lesson sts learn the use of (this ,that, these ,those) in the context of buying things. They also explore new vocabulary.

Materials

Abc print out from face to face starter SsBk ,
Abc Pictures (items) and cards (fake money)

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of shop items and practice of (this ,that ,these ,those) in the context of buying things

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a dialogue in the context of buying things

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Use the projector to view pictures of 10 shop items. Sts in two groups have the names of the items on cards. They come to the board and match them. FB.

Listening practice (4-6 minutes) • To provide a listening practice for shop items and highlight the stress in each

Hand each student an item. Play recording (R4.10) Students come to the board and write the name of the item they have when they hear it. FB Show stress Drill

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Sts look at photos A-D and they guess where the people are (in a shop). Check sts remember (customer and shop assistant). Sts listen to recording (R4.11) and fill in the gaps with the correct prices. Peer check FB ( Sts write the answers on the w/b)

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Use the projector to view picture (A). Draw (this,that,these,those) blank table on the w/b Check sts know the meaning of (singular ,plural, here , there) Elicit where "this" goes in the table. Do the same for B,C and D

Speaking practice (drilling) (2-4 minutes) • Highlight the /i/ sound in "this" and the /i:/ sound in "these"

Play recording (R4.12) Drill ( back chaining)

Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Sts do ex5 on their own. Monitor Peer check FB (answer key)

Speaking practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with speaking practice of the target language

Put sts in 2 groups ( shop assistants , customers) Shop assistants have the items with prices writen on them. Customers have fake money and each should spend their money on one item that matches the amount of money they have.( A:how much is/are this/that/these/those + noun ? B: It is/They are....) Switch groups. Monitor. Error correction if needed.

Extra Practice (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with practice to review the vocab taught in the lesson

Two groups. Put the items on a desk but hide one. Sts guess what is missing and write it on the w/b. Those who write it faster get a point.
