Materials

Abc Materials

Main Aims

  • To develop students' skills of listening for gist and detail in the context of a comparison between modern life and the past by different speakers

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students to understand some vocabulary items from the listening to make generalisations

Procedure

Warmer/LEad-in (3-5 minutes) • To get Ss interested in the topic To introduce the topic via a quick speaking task

T writes 'Modern life is ... than in the past' on the board. Ss work in pairs to complete the sentence and think of three examples to support it. T gets feedback and writes them on the board.

Listening for gist (5-7 minutes) • To listen for a general understanding of the text

Ss listen to check if they have the same ideas as the speakers (Listening ex. 1). Ss check their answers in pairs. T takes some feedback.

Listening for details (8-10 minutes) • To listen for a more detailed understanding of the text

Ss listen again and decide if the statements about the speakers are true (T), false (F) or the listening doesn't say (DS). Ss check their answers in pairs. T takes feedback.

Language Focus (5-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the items of functional language

Ss work in pairs and underline the words which are used to talk about making generalisations. T takes feedback.

Language Focus (4-6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Ss work in pairs and insert the missing word in each sentence. T takes feedback. T highlights the meaning and usage of the phrases in feedback.

Post-listening Activity/Speaking Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to use the language in a meaningful, real-world context

Ss look at the sentences that they've studied in Language Focus 1 and discuss which statement(s) they agree/disagree strongly and about which statement(s) they can make the most generalisations. Ss prepare their ideas with examples to support them and find exceptions. T takes some feedback on whether their ideas are the same.
