Description

In this lesson the students will learn about the future form. The students will be taught to make plans for the future, using will and be going to. The students will be following a controlled practice, helping them understand the form of future tense.

Materials

Abc Gap-fill activity, language reference handout, question task.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of future tense in the context of a weekend break
  • To provide clarification and practice of the future tense in the context of hotel problems and solutions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a dialog in the context of problems and solutions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students brainstorm and try to remember the problems Nicki and Gavin had. the teacher writes them on the board. Then the students think again and remember what the hotel manager told them when they got to the hotel late and what their response was. H.manager: "I'll call the police." Gavin & Nicki: "It wont happen again. Next time we're going t0 stay in another hotel." the teacher writes these examples on the board after getting feedback from students.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

the teacher highlights the future forms in each sentence and provides explanation for meaning and the difference between the two future forms. will- plan decided now. going to- plan made in the past but occurs in the future.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

the students are asked concept check questions for a better understanding. Will: q- am i going to do it in the future? yes. q- Did i know what i was doing 10 minutes ago? No. q- Did i make the decision now? Yes. be going to: q- Am i going to do it in the future? Yes q- Did i know what i was doing 10 minutes ago? Yes. q- Did i make the decision now? No. Form: Subject + will+ infinitive(v1) ex: I will visit Japan. Subject + (be) going to + infinitive(v1) Ex: I am going to visit Japan. teacher gives the students the handout form language reference pg 54 Pronunciation: I will ---> I'll The teacher models that the stress in on the 'll' followed by a pause then the verb is said. the students repeat and practice.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The students look at activity 2, the students work in pairs and come up with responses of how to solve their problems, using the target grammar. Example: -the bathroom is dirty. -Ok I'll clean it. The teacher gets whole class feedback, correcting mistakes the students did.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students look at activity 3 complete the dialog between the Guest and Manager. The students focus on using 'll and going to. The teacher monitors and helps students that have difficulties. The students then peer check and compare answers. the teacher gives WC.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students work in pairs. They use activity 3 as their modal and come up with problems and solutions of their choice. Then, the stusents write a short dialog regarding the problems and solutions. The teacher monitors and prompts ideas for the weaker students. The students model their conversation.
