Main Aims
-
To provide practice of words and phrases in the context of hotels.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To give students freer speaking practice to help their spoken fluency.
Procedure (32-45 minutes)
To generate interest in the topic, I will have students use their imagination. "Forget about the cold outside, and imagine it is summer... You are going to stay in a seaside hotel..." I will ask them to work in pairs and tell me the 5 most important things that the hotel must have. When the time is up, I will get some FB on what each pair came up with and write them on the board.
I will link the words students came up with during the lead-in with the words that I want to introduce them in Ex. 1. If there are any that they haven't mentioned, I will elicit and write them on the board as well. For example, "If my room is on the 6th floor. How do I get there?" (Answer: lift). I will mark the stress, l go over pronunciation and drill chorally.
I will show students the 'internet booking form' for a hotel in Ex. 1. They will complete the form by filling the gaps with appropriate vocabulary. Students will pair up to do the exercise. During monitoring I will check if there are any words they are unsure of. When the time is up, I will get a WC FB.
I will have students move on to Ex. 2 with the new vocabulary fresh in their mind. They will choose the four most important facilities for the people in the list. This is to practice further, check understanding and reinforce the vocabulary. There are no correct answers. They will be working in pairs then I will get WC FB to check ideas and answers.
I will have students discuss questions in Ex. 4 regarding the best/worst hotels they have ever stayed in. I will conduct the discussion in smaller groups so they can all practice speaking with each other. I will hand out the questions after they pair up. Once the time is up, I will have a a quick WC FB to get students tell the class what they think.
