Grammar: Prepositions of Time
Pre-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson students practice prepositions of time through grammar exercises. The lesson starts with a game using “at”, “in”, “on”. This is followed by a language focus exercise to discover time expressions in a text. Finally there is a controlled practice activity of fill in the blanks/complete the sentences and a freer practice activity for fluency in speaking.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of prepositions of time in the context of dating.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students practice in speaking for fluency.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To generate interest in the topic, I will begin with a game. I will put a big chart on the WB with columns headed "at", "in", "on". I will elicit a time expression for each one. I will divide students into two teams and get them to line up in front of the board. I will explain the rules. "This will be a race so it will be a fast game." I will also do an example before the game begins. For example, I will say, "Tuesday" and they will run and write it in the "on" column. I will give each team a different colored board pens so that the points can be awarded accordingly. Only one person gets a point so they have to write it before the other team.

Highlighting (8-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will link the game to the time expressions. "All three prepositions help to answer the same question. What is it?" (Answer: When?) I will handout students a tape script from their previous listening task. I will have them read it through and underline the time expressions. They will be working in pairs to determine "at", "in", "on" in Tapescript 1 and 2. I will make sure students are not looking for time expressions without a preposition. e.g. this weekend, at work.

Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will put students in groups of 3 and have them complete 2 activities. First activity is filling the blank with prepositions of time, "at", "in", "on". Second activity is to complete the sentences using prepositions of time and time expressions. After students finish the activities we will do WC FB and check the answers.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will have students discuss questions in Ex.1 regarding dating in Turkey. I will conduct the discussion in smaller groups so they can all practice speaking with each other. I will hand out the questions after they pair up. Once the time is up, I will have a a quick WC FB to get students tell the class what they think.
