In this lesson the students are going to learn some new vocabularies related to fear. They will focus on comprehending the text.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about phobias in the context of different types of fear

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of words related to fear in the context of different types of fear

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher starts talking about her fear of animals and related memories that she has. She wants the students to talk about the animals, they are afraid of.

Pre-Reading/Listening (12-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

In this stage the teacher is going to teach the students some key vocabularies of the text using some pictures to help them learn better. The students are going to look at the highlighted words in the text and comments and match them to the definations. Then they are going to check their answers in pairs and at the end with the whole class.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (2-3 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The students are going to answer 2 questions: 1- How many types of phobias has the writer mentioned in this text? 2- Which actress suffers from butterfly phobia? They are given about 2 minutes to read the text quickly and share their answers with the class.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The students are going to read the text deeper and complete each phobia with the correct heading from the list then read some comments posted on the website and match comments A - E to fears 1 - 5. They will check their answers in pairs and then with the whole class.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The students are going to be divided into groups of 2 and talk about their phobias and say when and how it started and how it affected their life.
