Books and reading
Upper intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will learn about defining and non-defining clauses through a reading text with the biographies of two famous writers. The lesson starts with a discussion about the authors. This will be followed by the pre-teach of the words "author", "novelist", "plot", "blurb". Then students read the text quickly to have a gist. They read again for detail. At the end, students respond to the content of the text in a pair discussion before a general feedback and delayed error correction.

Main Aims

  • To provide reading practice for gist and detail in the context of famous writers.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of of vocabulary related to literature that could be useful to Ss

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows a picture of two famous writers. Ss respond three questions. “Do you know these people? Have you heard of any of their novels? Do you know any other people like them?" (who write novels)

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T uses a general slide with bold words with the TL in the marker sentences and then a slide for each student to match with their meaning to pre-teach key vocabulary important for understanding the article. (Check Ap. 1 - Language Analysis Sheet) "J.K. Rowling is the author of the Harry Potter series." "George Orwell is famous for being the author of the dystopian novel "1984."" "Ernest Hemingway, an American novelist, wrote classics such as "The Old Man and the Sea" and "A Farewell to Arms." "Many people think that both Avatar movies by James Cameron have a very simple plot" "The blurb on the back cover of "The Great Gatsby" describes it as a realistic tragedy set in the Roaring Twenties." To focus on form, T elicits the parts of speech and makes questions related to the TL: Can plot also be a verb? (yes; T explains that it means to plan secretly) If the novelist is the person, what is the product of a novelist? (a novel) Can author be a verb? (yes) Blurb sounds a bit different to how it is written. How do we spell it? (B-L-U-R-B) To focus on pronunciation, T drills the four words altogether.

While-Reading #1 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist reading task

Ss match statements/extracts from the text with the corresponding book. 1. A young woman loses her husband. (PD: I love you) 2. A girl who is bullied and made fun of by other students. (Carrie) 3.
