Prepositions of Time
Pre-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson students will learn about basic prepositions of time (in, on, at) and practice the usage through a set of speaking activities.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide review and clarification of basic prepositions of time through written and spoken practice

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with semi-controlled speaking practice to develop spoken accuracy

Procedure

Lead-In (5-7 minutes) • To activate Ss' schemata, set lesson context and engage Ss. To check Ss's knowledge on the basic prepositions of Time

- Write On, In, and At on the WB. Tell Ss that you will give them some questions to ask their friends and that they should give answers using one of the words on the WB. - Present each S a question on a piece of paper. e.g. When did Nuri Bilge Ceylan win Palme D’or at Cannes Film Festival? When did man first walk on the moon? When will be the next general elections in Turkey? When do people like to go on holiday? When is your birthday? - Ss move around the class and ask and answer the questions for two-three minutes. - Get WCFB and correct errors if necessary.

Practice - Activity I (3-5 minutes) • To provide further clarification and practice

- Put three A3 papers on the board with the headings On, In and At and give each S a large paper with a time expression. - Ss go to the board and stick their word under the correct preposition. - Get WCFB and check answers. - Elicit the rules and write on the WB.

Practice - Substitution Drill (4-5 minutes) • To help Ss memorise the correct collocation patterns for each time expression

- Write "She went there + at + ten o'clock." and underline "at ten o'clock". - Put Ss into small groups of hree or four and give a list of time expressions. e.g. summer, Tuesday morning, 22:40, March... - Ss in turn change the time expression in the sentence along with the preposition using the words presented by the teacher.

Practice - Gap Fill Activity (5-6 minutes) • To provide controlled written practice

- Project the questions on the WB and explain the activity doing the first example. Give Ss the handouts. - Ss work individually and fill in the gaps in the sentences with appropriate preposition. - Ss check in pairs. - T projects the answer key on the WB.

Practice - Sentence Completion (4-6 minutes) • To provide controlled written and spoken practice

- Put half sentences on the WB. Explain the activity giving one example. e.g. The most popular time to get married is ... People usually have dinner ... Most people go on holiday ... The best time to go shopping is ... - Give Ss the handouts. - Ss work in pairs, negotiate their ideas and complete the sentences. - Get WCFB.

Semi-Controlled Spoken Practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide semi-controlled spoken practice

- Ss write 3 questions of their own. The questions should be formulated in a way that the answers should include the target prepositions. - Ss ask and answer their questions in small groups. - Monitor and give help when necessary.

Semi-Controlled Spoken Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide semi-controlled spoken practice, to encourage collaboration

- Put Ss into two or three groups. In turns get one of the Ss in each group to sit in front of the WB facing the others. - Project time expressions on the board one by one. - Each group ask three questions to make the S on the hot seat give the expected answer. - S on the hot seat listens to the questions and try to predict the time expression on the board. -If the S on the hot seat predicts the expression after three questions the team gets a point. If not the next team takes the turn an asks three questions. The team with more points wins the game.
