Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about winning the battle against disease in the context of health

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of adjectives with the suffix -able in the context of health

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll show an image and ask the ss questions about it. And they will find out the key word in this image. That word will be the first step to teach the ss adjectives ending with -able suffix.

Pre-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The ss will match the adjectives with suitable nouns given and make logical combinations in pairs. They will match them on slides.

While-Reading (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

I will give the text as a handout by mixing the paragraphs and the ss will try to put the paragraphs in logical order. After ordering the paragraphs, they will stick their papers on the wall and do pair check. After reading the text, they will put a tick for detailed reading questions in the chart which will be shown as a slide.

While-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

The ss will find the words which are relevant to the definitions given in the exercise 3. And they will write them on a six-pointed star paper. I'll highlight the words by basing them on meaning, form and pronunciation.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I'll show the two statements in exercise 4 and asks who agrees or disagrees with the given statements. The ss who agree with the same statement will work in groups and discuss why they agree with that idea. They will report back to the whole class.
