Teaching Practice 2
Upper-Intermediate, B2 level

Description

In this lesson, students will first generate some ideas about the realia which will be brought to the class by the teacher. They will share their ideas in whole class discussion. They are expected to come up with the words "optimistic" and "pessimistic" which is the topic of the texts. They are going to be shown a fact about the attitude of people in general (if they tend to be optimistic or pessimistic) and asked if they agree with the information given in the fact. Then the class will be divided into two groups, A&B. The groups will read two different texts. After they read their texts, they will be regrouped to work with a student from the other group and tell their texts to each other which will give them the opportunity to speak about what they've read. They will be given a vocabulary activity in which they are going to match the words with their definitions by trying to get the meaning from the context. In the final part, they will talk about what they are optimistic about in small groups. This lesson will set the context for all three lessons.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To integrate reading and speaking skills

Subsidiary Aims

  • To help Ss understand the meaning of vocabulary from the context

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To get Ss engaged in the topic

T shows a glass half-filled with water and asks Ss to describe it. T tries to elicit "half-full" and "half-empty" and writes those words on the board. T asks such questions, "Who thinks it's half-full? Who thinks it's half-empty? What do your answers show about your personality?" T elicits "optimistic" and "pessimistic".

Speaking (7-10 minutes) • To predict the topic

T shows the title "All's well that ends well" on the powerpoint. Ss discuss in pairs what they think it means. T takes FB. Ss read the paragraph to check and discuss with their partner. T takes general FB.

Reading for details (8-10 minutes) • To scan the text for specific information

T divides the class into two groups A&B and tells Ss that they will read about two people who answer the question, "What are you optimistic about?". T gives each group the basic information about their person. Ss discuss in their groups what they think the person is optimistic about. T gives each group the paragraphs about their person. Ss read about their person and check their answers with their group.

Jigsaw Reading (6-8 minutes) • To exchange information in pairs

T regroups the Ss, so they are in pairs of 1A and 1B. Ss tell each other about the person they read.

Vocabulary Focus (5-7 minutes) • To make Ss understand the meaning of vocabulary items from the context

T gives Ss a handout with words from Texts A and B to be matched with their definitions. Ss work in pairs to match the words with the definitions using the texts to help them. T puts the answer key on the walls. Ss check their answers. T deals with questions in FB.

Speaking (6-8 minutes) • To collaborate with their peers

T gives Ss two questions, "What idea do both texts have in common? What are you optimistic about?". Ss discuss in small groups. T takes some general FB.
