Teaching Practice 1
Upper-Intermediate, B2 level
Description
Main Aims
-
To review and extend Ss' awareness of present tenses (simple, continuous and perfect) and related time phrases, and to give controlled and freer practice in them, in the context of family and family history
Subsidiary Aims
-
To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency
Procedure (38-45 minutes)
Show Ss the sentences in Exercise 1 on Powerpoint. Elicit which tense forms they have studied in that exercise. Ss work in pairs and match the time phrases with the tenses. Monitor. Take some general FB - ask 'why' questions for justification.
Show Ss some pictures related to you and ask Ss to make predictions about the pictures. Ss work in groups of 3 and discuss their predictions. Elicit their predictions. Show 3 sentences about yourself and Ss see the relation between the pictures and the sentences. Ss work alone to write 3 sentences about their families using the time phrases. Monitor and help if needed. Ss then compare their answers with peers. Monitor and check for accuracy. Check the position of time phrases. Give FB.
Show the text (with gaps) on the Powerpoint and give 2 questions about the text. Ss read the text quickly to find the answers. Take FB. Then Ss work in pairs to complete the text with verb forms. Put the answer key on the walls. Ss check their answers. Deal with questions in FB.
Give each S the questions about family. Ask Ss to choose 4 questions that they would be comfortable answering. Drill a couple of the questions first. Ss work in pairs to interview their partners. If time allows, Ss can change partners to interview with someone else. Take some general FB.
