• To enable students to develop their reading skills for gist in the context of reading a small problem-solution essay which deals with the issue of social media addiction. • To develop Ss vocabulary knowledge in the context of common phrases and idioms used when writing a problem-solution essay. The language includes expressions such as: It would appear the main problem is…, one way to address this issue would be to…, all things considered, …
Procedure (38-45 minutes)
I will start the lesson by showing Ss the first slide of the presentation. I will ask them if they use/like social media. Then I will tell them that I want them to discuss in pairs the following questions: “Do you use social media? How much time? Is “social media addiction” really a problem?” Then I will send the students to the breakout rooms and give them 2 min to discuss the topic. Once Ss are back to the main room I will ask them what their conclusions were.
Gist Task: I will show Ss the next slide and tell them that I decided to write a small essay on the topic. I will give them one minute to read the text and answer two questions “What is the main issue that I address in the text?” and “What do I propose as a possible solution?”. I will give Ss time to read the text. Once they have finished; I will nominate 2 students to answer the questions. (4 min) Layout: Once I checked the understanding of the text; I will go to the next slide and tell students that they will have one more minute to read the text, but this time, I want them to match each paragraph from the essay to its purpose in the text. Each Ss will have one slide to do the task. I will send them the link and give them one minute to finish the exercise. Give OCFB and check the correct answers with the entire class. Answers (A): • Present a solution. C • Conclusion/ opinion. D • Discuss and explain a problem. B • Introduce a specific problem. A After they finish the exercise, I will as the students if the text is formal or informal. A: formal. I will ask students how they know if it is formal or informal. A: Because of the language that is used. (5 min)
Meaning: I will show Ss the next slide in the presentation. I will tell students that I’m showing them 3 expressions that I used in the text. Then, I will ask them to move the arrows in the slide so that they match their purpose on the text. “When do we use the following phrases?” I will give each student one slide. They will have one minute to complete the exercise. Once the minute has passed, I will check the correct answers with them. Answers: • It would appear the main problem is…Identifying problems • One way to address this issue…Offering solutions • All things considered…Concluding (5 min) Form: I will proceed to the next slide in the presentation. This time I will ask students to match the expression with the sentences that best complete the ideas. “Complete the sentences by matching the beginning and end so they form a coherent idea”. I will nominate one student to complete the first sentence. Then I will elicit from the students how the sentence is constructed. I will do the same exercise with the other two sentences. Answers: • It would appear the main problem with social media is that it can lead to addictive behaviours. Phrase + (with…) + verb + problem. • One way to address this issue would be to use stricter parental controls. Phrase + would be to + solution. • All things considered, social media addiction has a big impact on mental health. Phrase + , (comma) + conclusion. (5 min)
Tell students that it is time for them to write a small problem-solution essay. Give students 30 seconds to think about a problem they want to discuss. Ask students the topics that they chose. Show them the googles doc file. At the top of the file, they can find the text model if they need to check it again. Show Ss the page that they will use to write the essay. Tell them that there is something written at the end of the page, but to ignore it for the moment. Remind them of all the characteristics that the essay must have and that it has to be short. Give them 10 minutes to write their essays.
After they finish their writing, I will tell Ss that now they will work in pairs and check the work that their partner did. I will show them that at the end of each page there is a checklist that they need to mark while their check their partner’s text. Ask them to include any other suggestions that they may consider pertinent. Send Ss to breakout rooms and give them 4 min to check the texts.
Once Ss are back in the main room, I will ask them about their texts and give some feedback on content. Then I will ask for one volunteer to show his/her text and we will check it together. I can give some feedback on language use (DEC).
