To provide clarification and practice of vocabulary and pronunciation through a reading text in the context of celebrations.
Procedure (35-55 minutes)
Hand out greeting cards. Ask: What do we call these kinds of cards? tell the person next to you. 'Greeting cards' Elicit some greeting messages. What messages are on the cards? Tell the person next to you. Elicit answers and write it on the right hand side of the board with the heading 'Greetings' In pairs discuss what the cards are for. Elicit answers (birthday, wedding, retirement, anniversary...) Write answers on the board around a star. Write the sentence below on the board. Say: Look at this sentence and in groups of three talk about the missing Word. We send cards like this to c _______________ something special. (celebrate) Elicit what part of speech this is - verb Ask: What is the noun? Celebration Write celebration in the centre of the star. When do we use these cards? CCQ - on a normal day? no - on a special day? yes What do we call these special days?(Celebrations
List the words that students may find difficult on the left hand side of the board. Say: Talk to your partner about the meanings. Elicit the meaning for each word and write it on the board. Focus on pronunciation.
Reading activity. Students read and discuss the answers to the questions Elicit from different groups.
Students stand up ask them to walk in a clock wise direction and tell them to stop and face eachother . Ss complete the task with the person that is infront of them. Say: Ask eachother the questions and remember what your partner said. Handout question sheets to all students. Take some answers
Say:Think about the best celebration you've ever had. Talk about - when it happened - where it was. - who was there - why it was the best Remeber what your partner said and tell another person.
Focus on any pronunciation and grammatical errors noted during the lesson. Focus on sentence stress and intonation.
