Main Aims

  • Students will be able to distinguish between the present simple and present continuous tenses, understand their appropriate usage in different contexts, and apply them accurately in speaking and writing exercises.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will practice forming sentences using the present simple and present continuous tenses through guided activities and exercises, including both affirmative and negative forms.
  • Students will develop their ability to identify keywords and time expressions that signal the use of either present simple or present continuous tense in sentences and dialogues.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shares Jamboard (slide1) with 2 pictures of traffic jams. T asks Ss what causes traffic jams in their city and give an example. -In my city it rains a lot so the rain causes traffic jams. -I usually go by car but every time it rains I work at home. (use Present Simple) Give Ss some seconds to think and then nominate 2-3 Ss to answer.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T shares screen on Jamboard (slide 2) with a table. T explains the task. Ss will listen to an audio about a news report (CD2 52) and they will fill in the table with the correct answers. Ss will find the slide labelled with their names and do this activity individually. When Ss finish we will check the task toguether. ANSWERS -FM: 1. I usually go by train 2. I'm taking the bus today. -W: 1. I usually cycle 2. I'm walking today. -SM: 1. I usually take the tube 2. Today I'm walking.

Highlighting (4-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T shares Google Docs for Intensive task and explains the task Ss will have the audio script and will have to mark in GREEN the sentences in PS and in PINK the sentences in PC. They will find the page labelled with their names and will have marker sentences so it is easier for them to find the remaining sentences. Once they are done, show the script with all the answers so Ss can check if they got all of them correct.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T shares Google Forms for Meaning & Form with rules about PS and PC. Ss will have some time to read and figure out the rules. We will do this task together and T will nominate Ss to answer. pg 146 8.3 T shares Jamboard (slide 7) where Ss will have sentences with words used with PS and PC. Then T will show slide 8 with the same sentences and Ss will have to match wether they are in PS or in PC. We will do this task together. T will share jamboard (slide 9) with 2 sentences, one in PS and one in PC. T will say the sentences twice and elicit the stress words from Ss. Then T will do drilling to practice pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T shares Google Forms for Controlled Practice and explains the task. Ss will have to choose the correct form of the verb to complete the sentences using the PS or the PC. They will have marker sentences and will do this individually. Then they will listen to the audio CD2 54 to check their answers. T will check the overall answers to see if students were able to answer and correct any doubts. ANSWERS: -work -work -m' working -'m sitting -'m writing -don't work -is snowing

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T will show Jamboard (slide 10) and explain the next task. In one slide they will have all the vocabulary and grammar learnt and in another slide (slide 11) they will have some images. First Ss will look at the images and the example and have some prep time to make their own sentences about the pictures. They will see 2 similar pictures and with picture 1 they will make a sentence in PS and with picture 2 in PC. After they are done preping they will go into BOR and share their sentences with their partners for 5-6min. Once they are back in the main room they will share the sentences they made with the whole classroom.
