Procedure (40-48 minutes)
Name check - each student says their name and the name of the student sitting on their left. Ask Ss what Inoue Daisuke's dream for the future is in the last paragraph of the karaoke article in the previous lesson. - He's like to train Japanese pet owners to take better care of their pets. Elicit new vocabulary: hope, dream, ambition. CCQs:Do we use these words to talk about things we want to do? Yes. Do you think these words mean something 'easy' to achieve/do it? No. If I try hard, is it possible to make it come true? Yes. Give Ss HO1 to comeplete ex1. for these three new vocabulary. Peer check if they finish it. Take W/C FB. Analyse MFPA of these three words on the W/B and guide Ss complete the rest of HO1.
Write the names of Aminata, Eduardo and Elisa on w/b. Tell Ss we are going to find out three people's hopes, dreams and ambitions through a recording. Show Ss the pictures of three people doing different activities (HO1). Elicit what they do - rock music, drown, train/training. Play the recording of 1.22. Ss match the speakers to three of the pictures alone. Ss check the answers in pairs. FB - w/c check the answers.
Elicit - what we say when we talk about our hopes, dreams ans ambitions - useful expressions (on HO2) Give HO2 to Ss and ask them to read the beginnings and ends of the sentences and match them up in pairs. Play the recording 1.22 again and Ss check their ideas in pairs again. W/C check answers
Elicit Ss to read and circle the corrrect FORM of verb + infinitive or -ing patterns (e.g. love to/want to + infinitive; is to + infinitive; preposition + -ing; considering + -ing) with HO2. Ask Ss to work in small groups and complete exercise B. Peer check. FB - Nominate some less talktive Ss to tell the answers. Peer check and W/C FB. Use the sentences in HO2 to model and drill chorally and individually for pronunciation. (e.g. left side, right side ; gentlemen and ladies) Ss listen to the recording 1.23 and focus on the sentence stress and the schwa sounds. Practice with HO2. Ss work in pairs to mark the sentence stress and the schwa sounds on HO2. W/C FB - check answers
Demonstrate a consersation by choosing two circles from the worksheet and make a short note in each. (e.g. This year... learn how to play the guitar. Travel... Antalya) Instruct one learner to ask me about the things I've written. S: Why did you write 'learn how to play guitar'? T: I wrote that because I've always wanted to learn how to play the guitar, so I can sing and play at the same time when I go on a picnic with my friends. Give worksheet to Ss and ask them to choose 3 circles and write a note about their hopes, dreams and ambitions under each. Set time for 3-4 minutes. Put them into pairs and ask them to swap worksheet. Ss take turns to ask each other about the things they have written under the circles.Remind them to use the phrases in the language box to give their answers. Monitor - pay attention to problem areas for FB later.
Write some incorrect sentences on the w/b. Ask Ss to think/talk about the incorrect sentences in small groups of three for the delayed error correction. W/C FB - check the answers together in open class.
