Procedure
Elicit TL, show Olympics logo. Ask what Ss enjoy doing in their free time.
In groups, go through Hobbies & Sports conversation cards. T to monitor groups. Highlight any errors for class feedback
Labelling activity 1 on Sports Handout. Talking point : Which of the above sports are popular in your country? Which are not so popular? What other sports are popular?
Activities 2 to 3 on Sports Handout
T to explain to Ss they will listen to a recording and they will be answering ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to the questions provided. Before playing the track T chooses students to read out the questions to prepare for scaffolded listening. Play track 27. Do first question together. ICQ T ‘Does Daniel want to go swimming?’ Does he say ‘yes’ or ‘no’? Aim: Listening to make sure the language is embedded and to hear pronunciation from an external source. To improve Ss ability to listen for detail.
Activity (OPTIONAL IF TIME PERMITS/ FURTHER PRACTICE REQUIRED ) Play track 28. Ss practice pronunciation of factual statements. Aim : Pronunciation practice Activity: Each student lists a total of 6 sports or hobbies on the table provided. Students to walk around the class and ‘interview’ 6 other students. Asking them if they play or partake in the listed sport or hobby. If they do then whether or not they can play it well or not. Aim: Ss to freely practice the structures using their own prior language knowledge. E.g present continuous. Using the information collected by Ss to orally practice the statements of facts. “Yahya can play football very well.”. Extra activity for early finishers Ask stronger students to write a paragraph based upon the information they have collected whilst they wait for the rest of the class to complete the table filling task.
