In this lesson, students will learn some expressions about online friendships and read for gist and detailed information about social networking.

Main Aims

  • To provide students practice in reading for gist and detailed information in the context of online friendship and social networking

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review and practice in the use of words and collocations related to social networking; to provide freer speaking practice

Procedure

Warmer/Lead in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Post visual of social networking sites on the board (HO1). - Elicit the word for it. (Social Networking sites). - Ask students: Do you like joining social networking sites? Which social website are you a member of? - SS discuss answers in pairs. -Monitor, then FB. - Post visuals on the board depicting expressions related to social networking. - Ask SS to come to board and match cut out expressions with the visuals.

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify the form of collocations related to social networking; to drill on pronunciation and sentence stress; to introduce students to vocabulary that they will meet in the succeeding reading text

- Write sample sentences modelling collocations which were already written on the board in the previous activity. - Elicit meanings. - Drill students on sentence stress. Controlled Practice on form of collocations: - Tell students they are going to fill gaps to complete collocations about social networking. - Give out Task sheet.

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible; to focus students on the title of the article and to engage them in top-down processing

Tell students they are going to look at the title of the article they are going to read. Give out Hand out 3 (Title and question 2) -Tell SS to focus on the title and the second question. - Ask them to come up with a few ideas in pairs. - Monitor. -Whole class feedback.

While-Reading #1 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with practice in reading for main ideas (gist)

Hand out reading text.(HO4) - Tell SS they will read the text quickly individually. - SS check with partners whether the text mentions their ideas/answers in the previous task (question 2)

While-Reading#2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading task

Tell SS they are going to read the text again and find the paragraphs that contains the opinions of Dr Tyagi. - In task 1 (Detailed reading task) SS write the number of paragraph after each opinion. - In task 2, SS discuss with partners the reasons for Dr Tyagi's opinions in Task 1. - Monitor and help when needed. - Feedback with the whole class.

Post-Reading (Speaking activity) (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

With new partners, SS discuss the following questions: 1. Do you agree with Dr Tyagi? Why? Why not? 2. How did you meet your closest friends? 3. What's the first thing you notice about people? Is it different meeting people online? 4. Read the last paragraph again. What other benefits are there of using the internet to socialize?
