Main Aims

To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of methods of communication and expressing opinions( in favor of/ against).
Subsidiary Aims
-
To enable students to practice in reading and listening for gist, and using new vocabulary in the context of methods of communication.
Procedure (43-55 minutes)
Check Ss know what an intranet system is. Ss discuss the questions in exercise 1 in pairs. 1.How many emails do you send or receive a day? 2. How often do you check your emails at work(school)? What about at home? 3. Do you have an intranet system at work or school? 4. Do you find it useful? Take general feed back; -find out who sends and receives the most emails in the class, -who checks their emails the most and the least often at home and at work(school).
1)Write 5,000,000,000,000 , 15,000,000,000 , 1/4, 30 on the board. Tell Ss to read the text to find out what they refer to. 2) Ss focus on the book cover and check understanding of survival. Ask what kind of book they think it is and what the text might be about. 3) Ss read the text and answer the questions(in pairs) -Do you agree with Paul Johnson? - Can you think of any solutions to the problem? Monitor, feedback.
Show Ss the picture of the two men and ask them to find out what they remember about Graham from his conversation with Deniz. Check understanding of firm(=company) and ask what kind of work the two men do. Ss read the questions: 1.What has their firm decided to do? Why? 2.What do Eric and Graham say about the consequences of the firm's decision? Play the recording 1.14 and ask Ss to discuss their ideas in pairs.(play again if necessary) Check the word "ban" and the difference between intranet and internet. Give Ss the script to check their answers.
Explain what is "for" and "against". Ask Ss to read the sentences and do the questions 1-7. Find out if they have any problems with any of the expressions. Model and drill the expressions. Play the recording 1.15. Ss check their answers and pronunciation.
1-Write the necessary language on the board and ask Ss to use. give your opinions: I'd say..., There's no harm in..., It's important to... speculate about consequences: It might help us to..., It'll cause... 2- Ss read the situation. - Divide the class into two groups A/B.(A=in favor of the ban/ B= against) Ss will think of at least three reasons to support their argument. Monitor, help if necessary. Regroup them to discuss their ideas (one from A and one from B). Monitor, make notes for any kind of language errors.
Ss discuss the ban as a whole class. Find out if anyone has changed their mind about the ban. Ask what the best reasons were for and against the ban.
