Description

In this lesson, Ss will practice polite requests, the lexis related to food and restaurants, and orders and offers in the context of eating out.

Main Aims

  • to provide students with practice listening in the context of eating out

Subsidiary Aims

  • to provide Ss with speaking practice in the context of eating out
  • to practice/review the vocabulary related to food and drinks

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. ask Ss if they like going to restaurants 2. ask them when do they usually eat out 3. what is your favorite restaurant 4. is it cheap or expensive 5. what do you like/eat there

short listening (3-4 minutes) • To further expose Ss to the context

1- pre-teach the word 'answerphone' if they don't know it 2- tell Ss they'll listen to the recording and circle the right option; show them the HO 3- give Ss the HO 4- WC FB

Listening for Gist (3-5 minutes) • to listen for the main idea

1- tell Ss they're gonna listen to the recording (in which Emma phones Jack back) 2- Ss will choose a topic for the listening 3- write 2 topics on WB (they want to go to a party; they want to go to a restaurant) 4- play the recording once 5- Ss choose the title 6- WC FB

listening for specific information (scanning) (5-7 minutes) • to listen for more detailed information

1- tell Ss that they're going to listen again and say whether the sentences on HO are true or false 2- play the recording 3- check in pairs 4- WC FB

Vocabulary Matching / Word Stress (3-4 minutes) • to practice some vocabulary on menu

1- draw Ss attention on the Jazz Cafe menu 2- work in pairs, match the photos to the things on the menu 3- check whether they know the difference between 'chips' (hot): french fries in American English and 'crisps' (cold) 4- model and drill the words and phrases

use the words (5-7 minutes) • to practice using the words in the context of asking for the prices

1- focus on the menu 2- model and drill prices 3- tell Ss to ask questions wit "how much is a glass of wine? for example 4- Ss take turns to choose something to eat and drink and then ask their partner how much it is. 5- draw Ss attention to the example in the speech bubbles

listening for functional language (3-4 minutes) • to practice requests

1- focus Ss on the photo, elicit/pre-teach 'waiter' and 'customer' 2- tell Ss they will listen and fill in the gaps with words in the box 3- play the recording 4- play the recording again/do it myself and highlight the pronunciation of 'would u' 5- WC FB

freer speaking practice (6-8 minutes) • to practice ordering while eating out

1- as Ss to work in pairs and complete the conversation, using questions 1-4 from 6(a). 2- tell Ss ure gonna play the recording and as them to check their answers 3- play the recording 4- FB with some Ss 5- ask Ss what Emma and Jack order

Role-play (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

1- ask Ss to read and try the memorize the dialogue 2- tell them to take roles in groups of three 3- tell them they are going to act as Emma, Jack and waiter 4- role-play

if time (3-4 minutes) • To provide further speaking practice if there still is time

ask Ss to change the kind of food Emma and Jack order and play it
