Description

This reading text is about Andy Castle, a 37-year-old man who still lives with his family. Andy's mother and father are interviewed and give different opinions about what they think of their son still living with them, and then Andy is interviewed, giving his point of view about the situation.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about living at home in the context of family

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of present simple tense in the context of 'He still lives with his parents'.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of 'how old people are when they leave home or get married'.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in the topic

Get boardwork ready before the lesson starts. Prepapre a Post-it for each student, ask them to write their names down on it and hold the paper in their hands. Elicit - Ask Ss some general questions and ask them to put their name cards in the correct places on w/b according to their age, marital status and if they still live with their parents. If the Ss have got children, ask them if their children still live with them. Nominate some Ss to share 'Why?' or 'Why not?'

Language Focus - Speaking Avtivity (4-6 minutes) • To arouse Ss' awareness of the TL

Ss work in small groups and discuss the questions on the different worksheets. Set time (2 minutes for each questions) for them to talk about one of the questions and then swap it to another question with other groups. Take some general FB w/c.

Initial Reading (4-5 minutes) • To teach Ss some vocabulary they will encounter in the reading text.

Choose 5 words from the reading text, elicit Ss to say these words in context sentences (Worksheet 2). Model and drill these words for pronunciation.

Reading Task 1 (3-5 minutes) • To arouse Ss' awareness and interest of the reading text

Show Ss the picture of Andy Castle from Straightforward Elementary Student’s Book. Ss look at his piture and work in a group of three, write down what they think of the picture with 3 adjectives, 3 nouns and 3 verbs - worksheet 3. Get some FB w/c.

Reading Task 2 (4-6 minutes) • To give Ss practice in reading for gist.

Write down three headings on the w/b and show Ss the reading text (HO1). Tell them they will work in pairs and read it in one minute to match the headings with the text. Peer check Check as a whole class and deal with any questions.

Reading Task 3 (4-6 minutes) • To give Ss practice in reading for specific information.

Tell Ss to work in different pairs and read the text about Andy again with HO2, underline the correct word in ex 2. Finish this task in 2 minutes. Monitor and help where needed. Peer check in one minute. Post the answer keys on the walls, ask Ss to do self-checking.

Follow-up Activity (10-12 minutes) • To provide Ss a review of the whole reading text and practice speaking in fluency.

Tell Ss they will work in a group of three and talk about if they Agree/Disagree with Andy's mother/ father/Andy. They should also talk about Why?/Why not? Monitor from a distance but help where necessary. FB - Nominate one student from each group and report to the whole class.
