Description

In this lesson, students learn about the using "want" through a listening about spending money. The lesson starts with a discussion about buying presents for Christmas, birthday or New Year in Turkey. Then, a listening where students have to find how many men and women are talking and especially what they want. After highlighting and explaining some grammar about “want”, students will be asked in teams to match slips with the correct sentence using "want". Finally, as a freer activity, students to choose their favorite presents with pictures on the board and make sentences using the form they just learnt. They will then be mingling and telling those to others.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about students in the context of shopping

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of want in the context of shopping and buying presents
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of shopping and buying pres

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Because Christmas and New Year (and maybe some birthdays) are coming soon, I will introduce the subject trying to elicit the word "present". This will also be a good introduction to the topic "spending money and shopping".

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Using the context I have set about presents and shopping, I will use pictures to elicit some useful vocabulary students will be hearing during the listening part and using in the productive tasks. Students will find the words with pictures I will show them, we will do some drilling and I will write the word on the board with the corresponding picture.

While-Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

After setting the context of the listening (4 students who wants to buy something), I will ask the student as a gist task to listen and tell me how many men and women are talking in the recording. After giving the names of the characters and where they come from, students will have to look for detailed information with a second and potentially a third listening and find what the students wants to buy with a HO. The FB will be done by some students on the WB.

While Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

In order to explain the form "want" I will draw a tab with 2 columns on the WB: I want and I want to. I will ask the students to tell me again what the 4 students in the recording wanted and write it down on the left side. I will ask the students to say the same thing with "I want to buy" and giving a model. Students will elicit the negative form for each sentence. I will ask the students to elicit the form "want+ noun" and "want to+ verb". We will be doing some drilling as well.

Post-Listening/ Controlled practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the listening and expand on what they've learned

As a first productive activity, I will organize a team game (2 or 3 teams). I will draw 2 or 3 tabs with 2 columns"I want" and I want to". After setting the rules and a timer, students will be asked to match the slips with a picture on a table and the corresponding sentence on the WB. As a FB, I will ask the different teams to check and correct the other teams answers.

Post listening activity/ Freer practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the listening and expand on what they've learnedearned

As a final activity, I will stick pictures on the WB. Students will have to stand up and choose some presents and mingle in the class telling if they want or don't want this. I will be monitoring the activity and paying attention to the form and pronunciation, in order use it for error correction

If time (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will be asked to talk to their partner about a present they want to offer for Christmas or New Year to their family or friends using "I want" or "I want to".
