Procedure (45 minutes)
Recommend a restaurant to go to in Istanbul What have I done? Elicit the word recommend from Ss. If I recommend a new restaurant to you, will you want to go? Yes Tell Ss to write down all of the recommendations of things to do in Istanbul. Play YouTube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2n8T93LG-dg 0..35-2.35 (2 minutes) In pairs Ss check if they have the same answers. What are you going to talk about with your partner? In groups Ss will discuss if there is anything else that they would recommend tourists to do in Istanbul. Show Ss picture of dark street. Where is this? Tarlabaşi Would you recommend your friend to visit this place at night? No Why? Dangerous, dark What would you say to your friend? Don't go What did you do? Elicit evaluate from Ss
Show the individual PowerPoint slides. Stop after each slide. Ask each group their ideas. Do you agree? Who or what is popular in Istanbul? Adjectives We can put these words together to form expressions that we use when we recommend or evaluate. Evaluate - drill Have I made my decision? No Am I looking at the bad and good points? Yes Am i judging something? Yes Recommend - drill If I recommend something, do I think it is good idea? Yes Am I talking about the bad points? No What am I talking about? Good points With your partner think of as many phrases to recommend and evaluate as you can using the model on the board. Write recommend and evaluate on the board. Ss come up to the board and write their answers. Other Ss in group discuss their answers with other groups. Did you get the same answers? Look at the sentences you underlined in the article and fill in the blanks from Exercise 1. Ss complete Exercise 1. (2 minutes) Ss come and write answers on the board. Look at your sentences again. Are they evaluating or recommending? Ss will discuss in pairs. 2 minutes Ss get into groups and discuss their answers. Are they the same? 2 minutes WC FB. Write Wikipedia seems like a really great idea,but actually, it's quite a dangerous website on the WB. Look at quite and really in the sentence. In pairs, discuss if quite or really makes the sentence a lot stronger. quite + a/an + adjective +noun (weak meaning) a/an + really + adjective + noun (strong meaning) Use a cline to demonstrate weak and strong meaning. When do we use really?Really is an adverb that we use when we want to emphasise a meaning. When do we use quite? Quite means a little Elicit from Ss when we use a/an. Ask for example sentences.
You have foreign friends coming to Istanbul. They ask you for your advice. Complete the sentences. 3 minutes Compare your answers with a partner. 2 minutes Ask Ss for answers.
