Abc Handout of Reading article
Abc complete the verb form handout

Main Aims

  • Main aim: Developing reading skills, with a focus on skimming, scanning and reading for meaning

Subsidiary Aims

  • To have students recognize verb patterns with infinitive, to + infinitive, and verb+ing

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Give my example of slurping noodles being a complement in Japan Ask sts to give ideas of tips they would give to teachers/foreigners about Turkish customs…. Then ask if any students traveled abroad to experience any different habits

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Introducing vocabulary and the topic Give HO1 – ask students to look at the words in bold and see if they can guess and tell the meaning to their friend. Get FB to check their knowledge of the meanings, go over pronunciation for 'business' - two syllables Sts then go over text and ask each other if they think these statements are true or false. They mark their texts. Preteach touch - disgusting - empty - valuable before reading whole article

While-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To have students read text for more specific information

Ask students to read the article and scan to check their T/F answers Check on some of the answers by nominating students through questions on the cultures they read about like 1) Is it nice to shake hands in the doorway in Russia? 2) Is it OK to point your feet at someone in Thailand? 3) What do you do if a Japanese person gives you a business card? 4) If you have a cold when you are in Japan, what should you be careful about? 5) Should you admire a painting on the wall in an Arab's home?

Language focus (8-10 minutes) • To have students use the text to see how certain verb patterns are structured

Point students to the four underlined verbs in the article. Go over together, first eliciting what the pattern of each is and writing it on the WB in the following grid: v + infinitive | v + to + infinitive | v + Verb+ing should(n't) do | plan to go | enjoy meeting Next, ask students to do a closer reading task and scan for the verb forms following these words in the text: Tell them to underline when they find them would like can must like need try start finish forget might will prefer decide Ask students to pair up and mark each answer as 1 for v+infinitive 2 for v + to + infinitive 3 for v+ infinitive+ing - elicit some answers, write them in the columns on the WB - ask if sts can think of other examples

Post-Reading/comprehension (6-8 minutes) • To provide with sts with an opportunity to show understanding of the text and speak about what they learned

Have sts read over the article quickly one more time - tell them to notice what happens in which country Give sts directions for completing HO in groups of 3 Sts will match the country to its custom When finished, have sts talk to each other about which one they found most interesting
