Students will practice and improve their speaking fluency by describing places and locations using an article about New Zealand's geography and features.

Students will learn/review vocabulary related to geography and landscapes.

Students will enhance listening comprehension skills by listening for specific information about New Zealand's geography.
Procedure (44-40 minutes)
Set up: Show a video of New Zealand. Ask students what they see in the video and where they think those photos are from. Ask them what they know about New Zealand or if they have ever been there. Engage students by discussing their responses and creating interest in the topic. Task: Ss answer the questions open-class. Feedback: T nominates 2 or 3 Ss to share their ideas with the class. Transition: Introduce the topic of describing places and landscapes.
Set-up Play the audio introducing New Zealand. Ask students to listen carefully and take notes on the things mentioned. Task Students listen to the audio and note down the key features of New Zealand mentioned. Discuss what they learned about New Zealand from the audio. Feedback Open class feedback. T nominates 2 or 3 Ss. Transition Explain that students will now choose a specific aspect of New Zealand to describe in more detail.
Set-up: Present vocabulary from the audio. Task: Elicit meaning, form and pronunciation from students. Feedback: Check pronunciation or any questions that may arise. Transition: Explain that they will use these words in their descriptions.
Speaking Task 1: Set-up: Explain the task and model an example. Ss will describe a place. Task: Students work in pairs, each one describes a place he/she knows (e.g., hometown, favorite vacation spot). Ss ask follow-up questions Feedback: Pairs share their descriptions with the rest of the class. Transition: Prepare for comparing places in the next activity. Speaking Task 2: Set-up: Explain the comparison task and model an example. Task: Students discuss and compare places in new pairs or small groups. They compare their own place with their partner's place and with the information they learned about New Zealand Feedback: Groups present a summary of their discussion. Transition: Move to the DEC and wrap up.
Set-up: Highlight common errors noted during speaking tasks. Task: Students correct errors and discuss improvements. Feedback: Review good language use and provide positive feedback.
