Main Aims

  • To provide practice reading for gist and scanning receptive skills in the context of economics.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and meaning for lexis.

Procedure

Lexis Exercise (5-10 minutes) • Figure out what words the students know and don't know

I will start off with an individual writing activity. I will give the students a handout with 17 words and three boxes. The ss will be instructed to put words in boxes according to what words they know, might know and don't know.

Mingle Ex (10-15 minutes) • Students to talk to each other about the lexis

Students will go around the room and talk to each other for definitions of the words they don't know. This will allow students to explain to each other and allow me to personalize the next stage with the words they don't know.

Lexis (Meaning, Form, Pronunciation) (10-15 minutes) • To provide (m, f, and p) for the words the students do not know

After monitoring the students and taking note of the words that none of the students can define, I will write those hard words on the board. In efforts to reduce my TTT, I will give the class a chance to explain the word first before I elicit and give meaning. If time allows, I will drill some of the words.

Reading Exercise 1 (5-7 minutes) • Reading for gist (skimming)

Students will read "Economics for Everyone" (Global Upper Intermediate Course Book by Macmillan 2011) and answer the question - does the author like economist? Answer: No They will get eh gist and it will allow them to see the context of the article. After peer checking I will get feedback.

Reading Exercise 2 (10-15 minutes) • Reading for details (scanning)

Students will read in groups "Economics for Everyone" (Global Upper Intermediate Course Book by Macmillan 2011) and answer the question - who the author says we never see on the nightly news? Answer: anthropologists, nutritionists or architects. After peer checking I will get feedback. I will checking the meaning of the answers to make sure they understand. This is a good ex for detailed information so they can further understand the reading.

Reaction to text (5-10 minutes) • Freer practice, speaking

I will ask the ss what they think about economists to elicit freer speaking practice. If I feel the conversation is flowing I will ask more questions from their answers.
