Description

In this lesson, the students will practice the past form of to be when asking questions about the past and answering them. They will be tested early in the lesson, and following the clarification, they will move from controlled exercises to freer exercises, usually working on their speaking skills.

Procedure

Lead in (4-5 minutes) • To make them think of questions using to be

I will ask the sts to ask me questions using only the verb to be. This should make them think about question structures so that they can deal with the first activity. I will keep a few of their questions on the WB and ask the to use those questions in the final activity if we have the time.

Test (4-6 minutes) • To check the students knowledge of the TL

The sts will be put in pairs and given pieces of colored, cut paper. There will be a single word written on each piece. There will be 2 colors in total, each color standing for a question sentence. The pairs will try to build question sentences using them. Help will be provided gradually if they are having too much trouble with it. When they are finished with it, the sts will come to the WB and put the answer key on the WB.

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the TL's meaning, form and pronunciation

I will start with the meaning, checking if they know that the TL is used to talk about past events, using a timeline and CCQs. Next, we will discuss the form, pointing out that the TL simply replaces the is/are they have been using so far. We will work on the pronunciation, especially the weak form in the questions and statements vs the strong form in the questions.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To practice asking questions and answering using the TL

I will demo the first sentence of the exercise for the sts. Then they will be given the HOs and have a Q&A session with their partner. Feedback will be given if there are common problems.

Semi Controlled Exercise 2 (10-12 minutes) • To further engage the sts in the use of the TL

The sts are going to work in pairs again. They will start the exercise working alone, building the questions they are going to ask their partners first. When they have the questions, they will first answer themselves, and then ask their partners the questions, noting down their answers. Then they switch partners and everyone tells their new partners about him/herself and his/her partner. I will introduce the use of "both" when telling about their partners.

Free Practice (9-10 minutes) • To develop the students' fluency in TL

The sts will be given a HO for a "Find Someone Who" activity. They will mingle and ask other sts the questions and try to fill the list with names. I will be monitoring from a distance and will give feedback at the end of the activity if needed.
