Procedure (33-41 minutes)
I will share my screen with students and ask them to guess what these cards are for? I will ask a student to ask me about one card. Then, I will ask a different student to ask someone else about a different card. I'll repeat the question about the last card to a different student. 1. Driver's license- It's a card that shows one is legally authorized to drive a vehicle 2. Starbuck's Card- It could be a gift card or a rewards card for Starbucks (coffee place) 3. Planet Fitness Card- The card is for gym membership at Planet fitness Transition to listen to audio file.
1. Gist Task- use exercise 2a in course book to expose students to TL. Share PDF form of photo of different plastic cards. Share screen with students and then, share link of google slides. Give students 15 seconds to read 4 questions then ask them to please answer the questions while listening to the audio. After listening to audio go over answers quickly with students. 2. Use exercise 2b for course book to get students to notice the TL. Divide students into Student A and Student B. Play audio again for students and this time ask Student A to listen for language the speaker uses to speculate (to guess) and Student B to listen for language that compares and contrasts the photos. Share google slides link with students again and play audio. Share answers with students and remind not to worry if they didn't "notice" all of the phrases because we are about to go over them in more detail.
1. Meaning- Students do a quiz on google forms where they decide if the speaker of the sentence is speculating or comparing and contrasting. I'll give students 2 minutes to complete the quiz.
