Past Simple lesson
Elementary, Grade 5, A1 level

Description

In this lesson, students will learn how to use Past Simple (regular verbs) to talk about things that happened during their day. The lesson is based on video + text about what the girl did in the evening. The lesson starts with a discussion about daily routines, then the teacher writes the word “yesterday” and reminds students the past form of the verb “to be” and its forms. Then the teacher says: “Today we will learn more about the past, we will learn regular verbs”. The video + text presentation is followed by gap filling, where they have to complete the story with missing words. Finally, there is some controlled practice through sentence reformulation and free practice through role-play speaking activity, where students talk about their weeks.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students look at the photo story and suggest what the story is about. Ask Who can you see? What is the girl doing? How do you think she feels? Ss take turns to answer.

Exposure (8-9 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Watch and repeat the text line by line.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Give sts a list with expressions from the story and ask them to find the expressions in the text.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Repeat the new forms at least several times, paying special attention to their pronunciation. Read out the expressions in the box. Ask different Ss to suggest situations when they would use the expressions

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

To provise sts with multiple-choice quizzes and gap-fill handouts to guess the meaning of sentences.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

To make sts complete the sentences with the words in the box so they are true for them.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Divide Ss into small groups. First they work individually. They then compare their imaginary weeks in their groups. They choose their best ideas and read them out to the class. Have a class vote for the best ones.
